Angela R. Gillem, Ph.D.

Angela R. Gillem, is an associate professor of psychology at Arcadia University and is a licensed clinical psychologist. She received her B.S. in psychology from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in Clinical/Community Psychology from Boston University. Dr. Gillem came to Arcadia after serving three years as an Assistant Dean and Director of Multi cultural Affairs and Instructor in General Programs at Haverford College. She has also taught at The Pennsylvania State University and was a Distinguished Scholar in Residence during the summer of 1996.

Her clinical experience includes work in a variety of mental health settings including Aradia Feminist Counseling Center for Women in Boston, MA, St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C., and Dorchester Mental Health Center in Boston, MA. She has done counseling and psychotherapy with college and graduate student populations at Harvard Law School, University of Pennsylvania, and Swarthmore College.

Dr. Gillem works actively as a consultant in the areas of multiculturalism and diversity. She has done multicultural consultation and education, including work with the Equity in an Era of Diversity program for the Philadelphia public schools. She is a member and past officer of the Association for Women in Psychology. She is also a member of the divisions on psychology of women, teaching of psychology, psychological study of ethnic minority issues, and psychological study of lesbian, gay and bisexual issues of the American Psychological Association. She has several publications in multicultural psychology and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on social and cultural pluralism. Dr. Gillem's current research areas are racial identity development of biracial (Black/White) people and academic performance and resilience in African American Youth. Her professional interests are in adult survivors of sexual abuse and rape and racial, sexual and gender identity.
